The white ship is the Madakat which is the oldest, continually operated passenger ship in the country. At the left (stern?) you can see a woman in a white dress under an umbrella. That is the newly crowned 2005 Rutabegga Queen. The body of water is the Humboldt Bay. The bridge is the Samoa Bridge and that is the Samoa Peninsula in the background. On the other side of the Peninsula is the Pacific Ocean. To the right would be Arcata and to the left is Ferndale.
The Kinetic Sculpture Race is a nearly 30 year annual event on the North Coast. It is a 3 day race that starts in Arcata, goes to Eureka, and ends in Ferndale. All sculptures are people powered and must be able to traverse sand, mud, water, and asphalt. These are pictures of day 2 of the race as they start to cross the Humboldt Bay for the water portion of the race. It is a hoot and a half.
